The turnover of telecommunications
stood in 2007 at MAD 30Bn (USD 4Bn), up from MAD 8.5Bn (USD 1.1Bn) in 1999,
to provide 7% of Morocco's GDP. This contribution is yet expected to rise
to 10% in 2012, according to official figures released recently at a study
day on the sidelines of the 10th anniversary of the agency of telecom regulation
(ANRT). The sector has helped create some 37,000 direct jobs and around 120,000
indirect ones, and represents half of the foreign direct investments during
the last five years, Prime Minister, Abbas El Fassi said at the opening of
the study day, held in Skhirat (near Rabat). As part of the plan to boost
the sector, El Fassi said, the government's priorities include implementing
the digital development of the territory, and reducing the digital gap. He
stressed the need to develop e-contents in order to facilitate communication
between the citizens in underprivileged regions and neighborhoods, improve
the quality of proximity services, and democratize access to NICTs, especially
thanks to the downward course of telecommunication service prices.
